Year 7 Rugby:
Salford Schools’ Championship Runners-Up

After the heroics of the play-off victory against All Hallows, the Year 7 Rugby team were unable to repeat the feat two nights later as they fell to defeat at the new Salford City Stadium against a strong St Ambrose Barlow side.

The opening minutes of the game saw Ambrose take an early lead when their main threat broke clear to score under the posts for a converted try. Minutes later, worse was to follow as missed tackles allowed the same player to race around the defence to make it 10-0. The boys were struggling to come to terms with the size and demands of the full pitch, and Ambrose capitalised on their last tackle to go further ahead at 16-0. This time, Walkden’s response was much better and after completing a set of 6 tackles, the boys got back into the contest when Reece Walker dived over from close range to cut the deficit to 16-4. When it looked likely that the lads would score their second try of the half, Ambrose’s defence held firm and they were able to turn defence into attack with another break away try. A fifth try of the half resulted in a 24-4 half-time scoreline and the boys were facing an uphill struggle.

However, after a positive team talk at the break, Walkden took to the field hopeful of finding a way back into the game. To their credit, the boys battled from the restart and began to relax into the game. A flowing move that started in our own half involving Walker, Ben Moseley and George Hutton resulted in Hutton crossing for our second try of the game to make it 24-8. We were now making our tackles which forced Ambrose into a few handling errors, however they were still able to find a way around the defensive line to make it 28-8. At this point, heads could have dropped but the boys stuck to their task and following Moseley’s 50m break, back to back sets of 6 tackles and a quick tap penalty allowed Daniel Smith to crash over to cut the gap to 28-12. Hutton then thought he had scored his second try but referee Lockett ruled otherwise, and as Walkden disputed the call, Ambrose exploited some space to score the final try of the game in the final minute to complete a 32-12 victory.

Despite the result, the boys can be very proud of their achievements this year and will hopefully take a lot from the experience of playing at a national standard stadium. Their efforts and enthusiasm towards rugby have been excellent and I hope they develop further as a team next year.

Squad:    Ben Smith, Joseph Gaffey, Jacob Evans, Colin Farn, Ben Moseley, Jack Perry, George Hutton (capt.), Jacob Rimmer, Daniel Smith, Cameron Hodgson, Oliver Till, Adam Lindsay, Reece Walker, Niall Mayers, Scott Johnson, Dylan Bradbury, Adam Christey.
