RFU Emerging School’s Trophy Update

Walkden took part in their first full 15-a-side Rugby Union fixture against West Hill HS, Stalybridge in the Emerging School’s Trophy. It proved to be a close match with both sides tackling well and looking to run the ball at every opportunity. A try in either half was enough to give West Hill the win by 10 points to nil, but Walkden could be pleased with their efforts after creating a good number of chances to score. Next up is a fixture against Canon Slade HS so the boys are hoping for better luck!
Squad: Nicholas Hill, Jake Moore, Joel Pine, Jackson Render, Chris Mongan, Chris Heywood, Matt Whittaker, Harry Halsey, Alex Perkins, Nathan Ayre, Tristan Wilson, Rory Bradshaw, Dominic Kirkman, Tom Hudson, Tony Sykes, Gianni Rowland.

Salford School’s League Leaders and Sevens Cup Runners-Up
It has been another case of so near, and yet so far with the Year 11 Rugby team as the two biggest games of term both went against the lads in the narrowest of margins. Firstly, after reaching the Salford School’s sevens cup final, Walkden lost out to Buile Hill by 2 tries to 1. Then in the league fixture when missing 5 players through injury, Walkden lost out again by a 26-14 margin. In between these fixtures, the boys have produced good performances to secure a 42-18 win against St Ambrose Barlow, a 24-0 victory over Oasis Academy and a comprehensive 52-4 success over Harrop Fold. The results leave Walkden top of Division One, but with Buile Hill having a game to play, it could mean a play-off to reach a third successive Championship Final.
Squad: Daniel Bradley, Alex Boulton, Ryan Aylett, Ryan Thornton, Sam Lowe, Tom Pratt, Luke Bowes, Mark Anderson, Billy Martin, Nathan Rushton, Ben Prescott, Joe Houghton, Billy Fisher, Joe Vose, Harry Pollard, Oliver Brown.

Group Winners and Qualification for Quarter Finals
After the early term football trials, Walkden assembled a strong-looking line up for their first group fixture against St Georges. The boys certainly made a good start to the league campaign, and after leading 4-0 at half time, further goals ensured an 8-0 success with Callum Gray registering a hat-trick and substitute Josh Ennis grabbing a quick double. Our second group fixture was against Harrop Fold, and after our opening success, Walkden went into the game full of confidence. And despite a slight under performance from the side, Walkden ran out 3-0 winners with Rowan Kimmins notching 2 and sub Tom Smith heading in the third. Two wins from two, top of the group and into the Quarter Finals in February, well done boys!
Squad: Ben Oldroyd, Max Foy, George Lomas, Greg Whitehead, Mossie Cassidy, Rowan Kimmins, George Goodwin, Daniel Meadows, Nathan Ward, Callum Gray, Kade Griffiths, Kieran Foster, Tom Smith, Josh Ennis, Lucas Small.

Mixed Fortunes in League and Cup

Although only one game into the league season, Walkden are well placed to qualify from their group and reach the Quarter Final knockout stages in February. After defeating Buile Hill 5-1 in their opening game, Walkden visit Oasis Academy after half term needing a win to top the group. In the Greater Manchester Schools Cup, Walkden were drawn against Hawkley Hall HS, Wigan in round two. This proved to be a hugely dramatic game as Walkden found themselves 2-0 down just before half time. After pulling the scoreline level soon after half-time, the boys fell behind 4-2 with quarter of an hour to go. Luke Norris led the way and his hat-trick header tied the score at 4-4, and took the game into extra-time. No further goals meant penalties, and at 4-4 after 5 penalties each, sudden death saw three further misses before Jack Whitehead slotted home the winning strike! This gave Walkden a 3rd round tie at Urmston GS, however, the boys were unable to repeat their efforts of the previous round and went down by a 3-0 margin. So the cup is over for another year, but the league should be the target to round off the boys’ school days in style!
Squad: Angus Henderson, Jonny Collier, Sam Lowe, Oliver Brown, Adam Hodgkinson, Luke Bowes, Mark Anderson, Alex Boulton, Jack Whitehead, Ryan Thornton, Luke Norris, Jacob Pearson, Ben Yates, Billy Fisher.

The year 10 / 11 team played Buile Hill with an end result of 0 – 1.

An under 15 team travelled to Liverpool with Mrs Hackett and Miss Williams to play in the first round of the English Schools Competition. A very spirited performance on a very large pitch unfortunately did not give a positive score line (0 – 3) but the Walkden players gave 100% and hopefully enjoyed the experience.

Swimming

The divisional round (Gtr. Manchester and Staffordshire) of the English Schools Team Relay Championships is taking place at Broughton Pool (if not closed for refurbishment) on Friday 6th November.

We are entering a junior and intermediate boys team in both the freestyle and medley relays and hope for a successful evening. The national finals are being held in Wolverhampton on Saturday 6th February 2010. In order to participate in this event we need to be one of the twelve fastest qualifying time in the entire country. GO BOYS!!
