Memories of Walkden
Walkden High School on Birch Road will be closing at the end of this academic year. There is great excitement as the pupils and staff prepare to move around the corner and over the road to a fantastic new building.
Pupils, Parents and Staff had the opportunity to rename the school but chose to continue to be known as Walkden High School.
The Birch Road site opened in 1932 and was originally known as Walkden County Secondary School with a separate department for boys and girls. The gender became mixed in 1968 when 434 children returned to school in September. By 1978 thee were 895 pupils on roll and the population has continued to grow.
In September 2011 1192 Pupils and staff will leave the old building on Birch Road and enter an exciting new era in the new Walkden High School situated on 211, Old Clough Lane, Walkden.

The old site will be open to visitors on 29th June at 3.30pm – until 6.30pm and again on Saturday 2nd July 10.00am until 1.00pm. To ensure your visit is enjoyable school will need to make suitable arrangement for numbers on the day. Please contact school on 0161 975 8000 with your details and a suitable time can be arranged.
